Action Figure Maniac Reviews: QMx: 1/6 Scale Master Series: Star Trek: Spock

After an awesome review of QMx’s Captain Kirk, we are going to take a look at their Master Series Spock figure. Like with Kirk, I’m fairly amazed!

Spock comes in the same style book-type, window box that Kirk comes in. It has a magnetic front flap that, when opened, reveals a picture of Spock and the figure itself. The figure is beautifully displayed and is surrounded by a few of the great accessories he comes with.

I can’t say much more about Spock that I didn’t say about Kirk. He is absolutely stunning! They even got the green-ish skin tone down. This was quite evident when I accidentally mixed one of Spock’s hands for Kirk’s.

qmxspock001qmxspock002qmxspock003qmxspock004

The articulation is quite amazing! He has 25 points:

  • Ball-and-socket joint at the neck (x1)
  • Ball-and-socket joints at each shoulder (x2)
  • Swivel joints at each shoulder (x2)
  • Hinge joints at each elbow (x4)
  • Swivel hinges at each wrist (x2)
  • Swivel hinge at each wrist (x2)
  • Ball-and-socket joint at mid-torso (x1)
  • Swivel hinge joint at the waist (x1)
  • Ball-and-socket joints at each hip (x2)
  • Hinge joints at each knee (x4)
  • Swivel joints at mid-calf (x2)
  • Ball-and-socket joint at each ankle (x2)

The accessories rock as well! He comes with nine extra hands (including Vulcan neck pinch and Vulcan salute!!), a phaser, a communicator, a tricorder, a stand, and an away mission belt.

qmxspock021qmxspock022qmxspock026

As with Kirk, the communicator and phaser have functional features. The communicator opens and the phaser splits into Type 1 and 2 components (it connects via magnets)! Again, the communicator antenna is very delicate and requires a soft touch.

qmxspock025qmxspock024

The best of these accessories is the tricorder. The lid flips up and the disc compartment opens. The lid is very difficult to open, so be careful.

qmxspock023

I had a lot of fun equipping Spock with all of his stuff!

qmxspock005qmxspock006qmxspock009qmxspock008

The cool thing about the phaser and the communicator is that they will attach magnetically to Spock’s and Kirk’s waists (I missed this feature on the review of Kirk) and to the away mission belt.

qmxspock014qmxspock013

Spock looks amazing next to Kirk and the extra hands provide some cool interaction between the two.

Breakdown:

  • Playability – 5 out of 5. There is so much play-ability here! Just look at the interaction photos!
  • Packaging¬† – 5 out of 5. The book-type window box is quite stunning and displayable.
  • Paint and Sculpt – 5 out of 5. QMx has another winner on their hands! The sculpt is perfect and the green tint to the skin is done well.
  • Standability – 5 out of 5. Standing is a problem here. You know I like articulated ankles! With the included stand, I am quite happy!
  • Articulation – 5 out of 5. Home run here too! 25 points is a good number and many of the joints allow for movement in multiple planes.
  • Accessories – 5 out of 5. Kirk’s were good, Spock’s are better! The addition of the tricorder and extra Spock-specific hands is sweet!
  • Affordability – 4 out of 5. Again, how do you score affordability vs. worth. Is he worth every penny of $180, of course he is. Would the average Joe be comfortable with it? Perhaps not.

Overall impression: .34 out of 35. QMx has me hooked! If I could give them 5 out of 5, I would! I can’t wait to see the next wave of these amazing figures!

Next up is a beauty! QMx has released 1/6 scale figures from the original Star Trek Series. The first two characters are Kirk and Spock. Today, we’ll look at Kirk … and you won’t be disappointed.

Kirk comes in a gorgeous book-type window box with a magnetic front cover. When you open the front, you are greeted with a great picture of the figure on the inside flap and the figure itself. The figure is displayed nicely, surrounded by two accessories and some (that’s right, some) of the additional hands.

QMXKirk015QMXKirk017QMXKirk018QMXKirk019QMXKirk021QMXKirk020

The figures itself is absolutely amazing. The likeness to Shatner is spot-on – which has been hard for some companies to capture.

QMXKirk001QMXKirk004QMXKirk003QMXKirk007

The surprise here is the uniform. It is a beautifully tailored, highly detailed cloth uniform. There are zippers, embroidery, and faux leather that make him look very cool.

QMXKirk008QMXKirk016QMXKirk022

The away mission belt is pretty sweet! It velcros in the back and has magnets in it to hold a phaser and communicator in place!

QMXKirk005

I’m impressed with the articulation! He has 25 points:

  • Ball-and-socket joint at the neck (x1)
  • Ball-and-socket joints at each shoulder (x2)
  • Swivel joints at each shoulder (x2)
  • Hinge joints at each elbow (x4)
  • Swivel hinges at each wrist (x2)
  • Swivel hinge at each wrist (x2)
  • Ball-and-socket joint at mid-torso (x1)
  • Swivel hinge joint at the waist (x1)
  • Ball-and-socket joints at each hip (x2)
  • Hinge joints at each knee (x4)
  • Swivel joints at mid-calf (x2)
  • Ball-and-socket joint at each ankle (x2)

QMXKirk006QMXKirk012

The accessories though! QMx blows it out of the water on this one. He comes with 8 extra hands, a phaser, a communicator, a PADD, a pen, and stand!

QMXKirk023QMXKirk024QMXKirk027

The communicator, as tiny as it is, actually opens. This is amazingly cool, but since the wires holding the antenna in place are so thin, I felt like I needed to be extra careful with it.

QMXKirk025

AND the phaser actually splits into type 1 and type 2 components!

QMXKirk026

The accessories look and function great with the figure.

QMXKirk009QMXKirk010QMXKirk011QMXKirk013

Interesting bit of info: Apparently, QMx mis-packed the wrong belt with Kirk and sent them out as a separate piece. Here is the explanation note that came with the figure.

QMXKirk028

Breakdown:

  • Playability – 5 out of 5. This is definitely a collector’s item, but dang there is so much play possibility!
  • Packaging¬† – 5 out of 5. A beautiful magnetic book-type window box makes this very displayable.
  • Paint and Sculpt – 5 out of 5. The likeness and paint apps are near perfect. His eyes are glossy, you can see wrinkles in his forehead, and the shading is great. This is Shatner.
  • Standability – 5 out of 5. He stands well enough on his own, but the included stand is nice.
  • Articulation – 5 out of 5. 25 points works really well here, especially when a lot of the joints have multiple function (i.e. swivel and hinge).
  • Accessories – 5 out of 5. I’m in love with these accessories. Not only are they appropriate, they are functional!
  • Affordability – 4 out of 5. I hate to do it, but since I call this category “affordability,” I have to score it like it is. This is a good price for the quality, but its a little high for casual collectors.

Overall impression: .34 out of 35. That’s right, a near perfect score! If it wasn’t for the “affordability,” I would have scored perfect here. This is a must have for all fans and collectors. Keep um coming QMx! Spock is up next!

Action Figure Maniac Reviews: Eaglemoss: Star Trek: Future Enterprise NCC-1701-D

Star Trek: Future Enterprise NCC-1701-D
Eaglemoss
Retail: Varied, Secondary Market

I sang the praises of Eaglemoss in my last review. So, I will only mention here that the selection of ships in their Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection has me a happy geek!

This review will cover another of their premium subscription offerings – the future Enterprise NCC-1701-D. From what I have read, this was a free item offered to subscribers in the UK only. There might be two version. I am unsure which this is.

The Future D comes in the standard OSC packaging. A blue box with a molded clear plastic cover.

FutureEntD001FutureEntD002FutureEntD004FutureEntD005FutureEntD003

The ship itself is quite beautiful. There are some really nice details. The aztec pattern is a bit dark for my tastes, but it is a nice edition.

FutureEntD008FutureEntD009FutureEntD011FutureEntD015

The added structural details: strut fins, phaser banks, third warp nacelle, phaser canons, and phaser lance are all well done.

FutureEntD007FutureEntD010FutureEntD016

My only complaint about this offering, and it could be unique to mine, is that there are gaps in the nacelles near the Bussard collectors.

FutureEntD006FutureEntD012

When compared to the regular Enterprise-D, you can see the darkness of the aztec pattern, but the ship looks nice next to its younger self.

FutureEntD013FutureEntD014

Breakdown:

  • Playability – 5 out of 5. The future Enterprise-D has good weight and feels nice in the hand as you fly it around your room.
  • Collectibility – 5 out of 5. The packaging on this one makes for an awesome display and, as it is a subscriber gift, not everyone has it.
  • Paint Applications – 4 out of 5. I really like the paint apps on this … except for the dark aztecing.
  • Standability – 5 out of 5. She comes with a stand specifically designed to hold her in place. I forgot to take photos, sorry.
  • Articulation – N/A
  • Accessories – N/A
  • Affordability – 4 out of 5. As this is, for non-UK customers, a secondary market item, the price will vary. I paid a little less for this than the Borg Cube.

Overall impression: 23 out of 25. Eaglemoss’s future Enterpise-D is a solid piece. My only complaints are the aztecing and the gaps at the nacelles. The playability and details are really nice. If you are collecting this line, or are a fan of the future D, you should pick this up!

Eaglemoss has been wowing me with their Star Trek: The Official Starships Collection. The detail and selection are amazing! I never thought we’d get a collection of Star Trek ships so vast.

One of their offerings is the Borg Cube! It was offered as a premium subscription gift. There are two version: UK release and Japanese release. This review is for the UK version.

You won’t see pictures of packaging here. It was a simple white box and I couldn’t see myself taking photos of a white box. That would be ludicrous.

Out of the box, the Cube is fairly nice looking. It has grey panels with sections cut out that display white backgrounds. The white sections are a bit disappointing, but they do have a purpose.

BorgCube001BorgCube002

When the Borg Cube is turned on, it has a really cool light-up feature.

BorgCube003BorgCube004

The panels are a bit flimsy, but when I picked up the Enterprise-D for comparison photos, I was reminded that many of the ships have light, flimsy plastic sections. I was afraid to apply too much pressure when unscrewing the battery cover none-the-less.

BorgCube008BorgCube007BorgCube006

There is no true scale in this line, but the Cube is quite a bit larger than the Ent-D.

Breakdown:

  • Playability – 5 out of 5. This has play written all over it, despite it being a collector’s piece.
  • Collectibility – 3 out of 5. The plain, white box packaging is disappointing. The other ships come in nice display boxes. That said, this is an exclusive offering and I had to find mine on eBay.
  • Paint Applications – 3 out of 5. The grey is appropriate, but there is no shading or variation. They could have made the paint apps a little more dynamic. The white, cut-out sections are distracting when the Cube is off, but are brilliant when on.
  • Standability – 4 out of 5. It’s a cube, it stands well. Ha! A stand would have given this a boost though.
  • Articulation – N/A
  • Accessories – N/A
  • Affordability – 3 out of 5. This is, for non-UK customers, a secondary market item. I found the price I paid affordable, but you may not.

Overall impression: 18 out of 25. Eaglemoss’s Borg Cube is a nice piece. There could have been some improvements, but the lights make it a really cool display when turned on. Collectors will be pleased.
